February Meeting

Minutes – February 2023

Members Present:

Scott Elliott (President), Charles Newcomb (Treasurer), Randy Haight (Secretary), Gary Overby (Chaplain), Al Baker, David Beeskau, Keith Bickley, Mel Howell, Ed Smith.

  • President Scott Elliott gaveled the meeting to order.

  • Chaplain Gary Overby led the invocation.

  • Mel Howell led the Flag Salute.

  • Randy “Doc” Haight led the SAR Pledge.

Officer’s Reports:

President

Old Business

Delta Chapter Officers were again reminded that all must complete Youth Protection Training (Online).

Delta Chapter received a check from Wreaths Across America for our participation which was turned over to Treasurer Newcomb.

President Elliott provided nomination criteria to all members for Service Awards, ahead of our tentatively planned annual award banquet.

John Humphrey is transferring to a Chapter (TBD) in Kentucky.

New Business

The Chapter was pleased to welcome back member Ed Smith, who was present at this meeting.

Those members who voted on the Oration Contest submissions turned in their voting sheets to President Elliott for overall scoring and compilation.  All three of the students will be invited to our March meeting where they will be notified of their ranking and will be presented awards.  The Chapter previously agreed to award $200 to the first place winner, $100 to the second place winner, and $50 to the third place winner.  The first place winner will also be presented with a SAR Ovation Medal.  The top winner will be invited to participate in the Oration contest at the State level.

Mel Howell read the America 250 Minutes.

Treasurer

Treasurer Charles Newcomb reported the Chapter’s bank balance is $8,800 (not including the check received this date from Wreaths Across America).

Chaplain

Gary Overby announced that the Annual Inspection for the Naval Sea Cadets (Stockton and Modesto) will be held in March where the Chapter will provide two citizenship awards.  The Jr. ROTC will hold their event in April or May and the Chapter anticipates presenting five awards.

Secretary

Registrar

Position Vacant.

Presentation

Mel Howell provided a video presentation entitled “The Men of the American Revolution” which was a video presentation by Professor Linwood Thompson, a California History Teacher from Southern California who has previously won the California Teacher of the Year Award in California for his innovative teaching style.

This was a very moving presentation by Professor Thompson highlighting Samuel and John Adams, John Hancock, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson and Patrick Henry*.

*Secretary’s Note:  Patrick Henry is one of President Scott Elliott’s “Patriot Ancestors” with SAR.

  • Charles Newcomb led the SAR Recessional.

  • Gary Overby provided the Benediction.
